The American Institute of Architects (AIA), under the leadership of Carl Elefante, broke the news that one of their own would be recognized for his phenomenal accomplishments. A non-profit organization dubbed Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters (MIAL) will recognize Robert Ivy, AIA’s Executive Vice President and Chief Executive Officer, for his impressive accomplishment in the field of architecture.
The president of AIA lauded Ivy as an industrious and successful man in the realm of architecture that he is the embodiment of what it takes for one to be a professional architect. His special honor marks the first time an architect receives the Polk Award. The Polk Award is primarily awarded to Mississippi-connected performers and art patrons who exhibit exemplary success in the creation, performance and support of art.
Following the announcement, Robert Ivy received accolades from various personnel who acknowledge his devotion in art promotion. In a statement to the media, Elefante stated that Robert was the perfect symbol and ambassador for their profession. The president added that he was delighted to congratulate Ivy as a native Mississippian for his recognition.
MIAL president Nancy LaForge asserted that Ivy was indeed a performer who has made architecture more accessible to almost everyone in the modern society. The president stated that Ivy’s place in the field of architecture cannot be replaced by anyone in Mississippi. She added that Ivy’s rightfully deserved the award due to his immense devotion and lifetime support of the profession.
Ivy joins a small list of previous honorees. Among them includes actor Morgan Freeman who received his award in 2007. Other award winners include writers Eudora Welty and Shelby Foote who received their honor in the years 2001 and 2004 respectively. Their predecessors included the late artist Walter Anderson (1989) and singer Leontyne Prince who was the award winner of 2000. Alongside Ivy during the official conferment will be a stained-glass designer of Pearl River Glass Studio Mr Andrew Young.
Who is this Renowned Architecture Robert Ivy?
Robert Ivy is a Mississippi-born successful writer, author, and global commentator on architecture. He attended the University of the South where he graduated with Bachelor of Arts in English. He later pursued a Master of Architecture degree from Tulane University. Before that, he served as a US Navy officer. In 2017, he received the Dean’s Medal from the faculty of Architecture in the University of Arkansas.
In 2010, he was crowned a “Master Architect” by the national architectural group. The honorary designation is only given to world’s successful architects who have accomplished notable developments in the profession. He received a National Magazine Award from Architectural Record, where he served as the editor-in-chief. He joined AIA in 2011, an organization that has recorded great success under his direction.
